Root Canals

If you have a crack or deep cavity in your tooth, it's possible that bacteria can get inside your tooth and cause an infection. This infects what is known as the pulp, and a root canal is needed to remove the infected pulp.

The pulp is a mixture of nerves and blood vessels and is found in the middle of the hard layers of each tooth A dental X-ray can also be used to see if a root canal is needed.

How Dr. Wise and Dr. Bonev do a root canal:

  1. Local anesthetic ("freezing") is administered.
  2. We'll place a rubber dam around your tooth to protect it from bacteria and saliva while we work.
  3. We will drill a small opening in the tooth so we can reach the root canal.
  4. Using several very fine dental tools, we will take out the pulp and enlarge the root canal system.
  5. Once the pulp is gone, we'll fill that space with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material.
  6. Now that we're done, we'll seal the opening of the tooth with a filling.
  7. All root canal teeth should have a crown placed on them when the root canal is finished.
