Root Canals
Services > Root Canals
If you have a crack or deep cavity in your tooth, it's possible that bacteria can get inside your tooth and cause an infection. This infects what is known as the pulp, and a root canal is needed to remove the infected pulp.
The pulp is a mixture of nerves and blood vessels and is found in the middle of the hard layers of each tooth A dental X-ray can also be used to see if a root canal is needed.
How Dr. Wise and Dr. Bonev do a root canal:
- Local anesthetic ("freezing") is administered.
- We'll place a rubber dam around your tooth to protect it from bacteria and saliva while we work.
- We will drill a small opening in the tooth so we can reach the root canal.
- Using several very fine dental tools, we will take out the pulp and enlarge the root canal system.
- Once the pulp is gone, we'll fill that space with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material.
- Now that we're done, we'll seal the opening of the tooth with a filling.
- All root canal teeth should have a crown placed on them when the root canal is finished.
